The name “Vieux,” meaning “old” in French, came from necessity during and after World War II, when the Netherlands struggled to import genuine French cognac. Due to high taxes and restrictions, Dutch producers went to work with locally available ingredients to create an alternative with a similar flavor profile.

Vieux quickly became popular for its accessibility in the postwar years. From this tradition, Ben Vieux was marketed as a way to make conviviality accessible to all.
